UGH!! It sounds like the sickies are making their way around west Michigan again! Last night I ended up taking Katie with me to Kevin’s karate class since my in-laws are still in Florida to find out the instructors son (same age as Katie) wasn’t feeling 100% so he sat in the bleachers by Katie & I so I could read them both some books. I felt so bad for him.. he was acting fine until 10 minutes to go in class when he started telling me that his belly hurt. Needless to say the first thing we did when we got home was wash our hands.
Then I just dropped Katie off at pre-school and I swear I heard one of the mom’s tell the teacher that her daughter was starting to feel better if not to give her a call and that’s while hearing another child cough away in class. I’m hoping that cough was coming from one of the siblings instead.
So I’m sure before long I’ll be having a sick pumpkin or two in my house. If not, I will be total shocked since it’s not as if we have any hospital disinfectant we can use here.
I did find something that helps with coughs though! So if you, or someone you know comes down with a cough, try this!
- Take an onion (I just use the sweet onion) and chop it up in small pieces and put it in a tupperware type container (or a cool whip container would work too).
- Pour sugar on top of it. I never really measure.. just enough to cover the onion completely.
- Put the lid on the bowl/container and have it sit for at least a couple hours.
- After a couple hours if you look you will start to see a syrup.. take a spoon and get some of that syrup and take it. The longer your onion sits the more syrup you will get. After awhile you won’t be coughing anymore.
I have used this 3 times now with Kevin and every time it worked! The best example was he starting hacking when we got to Florida. It was so bad that we actually called his parents up to give them a heads up in case they didn’t want to come up to see us. They said they still would so Paul had me run to the store to get some cough medicine at $7 a bottle! I bought it, but I also ended up buying the smallest onion I could find and the smallest bag of sugar I could find. I think I spent about $2 total for the onion and sugar. That night Paul’s parents got there and heard Kevin hacking away. By then I had some syrup and gave him a spoon full before he went to bed. I don’t remember if I gave him any during the night, but I’m sure I gave him another spoon full before we left for Magic Kingdom. By the time we got home I had totally forgot about his cough.. I ended up asking Paul and his parents if they had heard Kevin cough at the park at all and they all looked at each other and said no! It was then that they too became believers in it. So now I always keep an onion on hand just in case. Great thing is you don’t have to buy a huge onion.. just a small onion will do!
Oh yeah.. I don’t do like a spoon full every hour or anything like that. Just when he starts hacking I give him a spoon full. I will admit since it’s made from onion it tastes like onion so you might want to have a chaser (glass of water) with you. That’s the only why I can get Kevin to take it.
If you ever do use this for a cough and it works for you too, please let me know!
It’s great when your friends can start sharing exciting news with you rather than down in the dump news. I have another friend (actually my best friend) whose husband works for a printing company. The owner of the company is ready to retire and asked my friends husband if he would be interested in buying the company from him. If not, then he will end up closing the doors.
Even though they aren’t 100% sure what the owner will sell them the business for, they are really considering buying it as they can think of all the different ways they could grow the business as the current owner didn’t want to do the extra things like business envelopes, letter head, wedding and graduation invitations, things like that!
While I’m excited for them, I’m also nervous too! I just hope and pray that they take their time and go slow on things and they don’t end up biting off more than they can chew. As long as they can keep each other grounded.. I think though that they will do great with it!!
Yeah!! My parents are finally home from Alabama! Now my life can start getting a little back to normal. It’s not as if I see them a lot, but at least when they are home I have something to look forward to every week and that’s going over to their house for Sunday dinner. That’s one day I know I can get out, let my hair down a little and enjoy adult conversation! Of course having my mom cook dinner is a major bonus.
This Sunday not only do we get to have Sunday dinner again, but we also will be celebrating my nephews 6th birthday! He ended up turning 6 on Feb 24th, but we tend to celebrate it a little later as a family once my parents get home from Alabama. I always used to buy the kids (nephews and nieces) presents for their birthdays. but it seems like the older they get the harder it gets. I don’t like just buying any ol’ thing, I want it to be something that has their name all over it and no, I don’t mean personalized gifts like a mug with their name on it, I mean like model of their favorite kind of airplane, or for my niece something to do with horses as she loves horses.
Since I’m having such a hard time finding them things, plus I know they already have a lot of that kind of stuff as that’s what my Parents tend to get them too I’ve decided the easiest thing for me and I’m sure they don’t mind is if I just give them a card with cash. That way they can either save it and put it towards a bigger gift for themselves, or maybe save it and put it towards a car some day or college. I’ll never forget when my Aunts & Uncles used to send us money, I loved putting it in the bank and seeing my bank account grow. I some how feel (and hope) my nieces and nephews think the same way.
Well, I was reading the news on yahoo and they had an article saying how the days of them leading the video games may soon be coming to an end. Here for the last couple years I’ve debated on getting the kids a wii for Christmas, but instead thought why not put the money we would of used on a Wii towards our Disney vacation instead. That way we were able to do things (like eating dinner with Cinderella) that we otherwise wouldn’t of been able to do. Now with them selling less consoles maybe that means the price of them will come down, just like the price of the LCD TV’s. It’s amazing to go to the store and see these big tv’s that have such clear pictures now being under $1000! If that indeed is the case I wonder what we will end up buying this summer… a wii, new tv or that Weber grill we have been dreaming about?!? Decisions.. decisions.
I just wanted to say Happy Anniversary to the one I love! I can’t believe it’s been 9 years now since we said I DO! Even with all the up’s and down’s we have had, I still wouldn’t of traded it for the world! I love you Paul!
I must be bad luck this year. I’ve gone on two vacations and both times I ended up having friend pass away due to cancer. While it’s hard seeing someone old pass away to cancer, I can say it’s even harder to watch a mother of 2 young children pass away as well, and that was the case for me both times.
Now I just found out this week a girl I graduated with is battling breast cancer and she too has 2 young children. I keep wondering.. why are younger people now getting this awful disease? Before it use to be just old people who got it.. now it seems to be hitting the younger people as well. (30’s)
Seeing these husbands/dad’s now deal with the everyday life of their 2 young kids without the support of their wife just crushes me. Both moms were stay at home moms so now the Dad’s are having to find day care for their kids.. just another added expense for them. That’s where life insurance would of come in hand.
Paul and I already bought our term life insurance for the “just in case” and I’m so glad we did because at least I know if something happened to me and he had to find day care he would have the money to pay for it. I know some of you are saying why did you go with term life insurance instead of whole life insurance. The reason why we chose term was because we just wanted the life insurance part of it.. we didn’t need them to also invest money for us in bonds or the money-market. If we want to invest in that stuff, we would rather do it ourselves instead. Plus with term we were able to buy it for a certain number of years where then it will expire and we will have to reapply, which was fine with us because by the time we have to re-apply the house will be paid off (which it already is, but we are looking at maybe upgrading) so we wouldn’t have to have as much of a policy on each other.
All I can say is if you don’t have life insurance yet and you have a spouse and kids, what are you waiting for? Ask around and see who people recommend and get quotes. I think you would be surprised on how cheap it is, and then you will feel better knowing your loved ones will be ok in case something happens.
My husband just read how Michigan’s unemployment is suppose to top 15% through 2011!! This year alone we (in Michigan) are suppose to average 15.8% unemployment this year. Can I once again say Thank You Jennifer Granholm for blowing us away like you said you were going to! I still can’t believe people actually voted for her the second time around.
With so many people applying for one job the employee screening would have to be more thorough than ever before and it should be! If I was a business owner looking for help, I would want the best employee I could find and wouldn’t settle at all. Now’s the time you would have to go to your job interviews with your “A game”.
With unemployment going to be that high, I guess I will just keep praying that even though my husband hates his job, that he can at least stay working there until the economy picks up and maybe then he can start looking elsewhere.
Do you ever look at your kids and hope that one day they will take after either you or your spouse a little bit more than what they currently do? So far Kevin is so much like his Daddy. While I love his Daddy, there are some things that I hope he doesn’t follow his Daddy’s footsteps in. For example… his temper. Daddy (and I will admit Mommy sometimes too) has a quick temper. Kevin has been doing better on controlling it, but when he does snap… you better watch out. I was always hoping by taking karate that would help control his temper a little. So far I think it has a little, but he still has quite a ways to go. Of course when I see him getting mad at his sister, most of the times I can’t blame him as I would be just as mad if what she did to him she did to me.
Then there is the issue of his skin. Parts of me hopes he has my skin when I was in high school as I didn’t have much acne and I know Paul did as he ended up taking acne pills, but I wouldn’t want him to have my skin now as I’m allergic to quite a few things that will make me break out in a bad rash with oozy sores. Thankfully (after 9 years) it’s finally starting to get better, but unfortunately I have a feeling I will always have the scars from them.
But there is one thing I do hope he gets from his Daddy and that would have to be his Daddy’s outgoingness. Paul can just walk up to anyone and start talking with them. No matter if we are in a store, at a wedding or him driving around looking for places to hunt and I would have to say a majority of the time people love talking to him. I’ve gone with him before when looking for places to hunt and let me tell you, he doesn’t know how to quickly talk to someone. There was one time he was going to drive over to this one place (15 minutes away) as he had to talk to them about something and 4 hours later he finally came home. That whole time he was chatting about anything and everything.
So do you wish your little one took after you or your spouse? If so, who do you wish they take more after? You or them?
For you bloggers out there, I have a question for you? Do you advertise your blog or do you just hope that people some how find you maybe by making comments on other peoples blogs or by searching for something you wrote about? I really don’t advertise, I guess the only place I do would be on entrecard, but I haven’t been keeping on top of that like I should.
I guess I wonder if it’s worth it to advertise? Why do people advertise? I know some places you have to pay, but then there are also free directories you could do too. What do you do and why?
Sorry to vent, but I need to let it out somewhere. A few years ago Paul was having such a hard time sleeping I finally was able to talk him into going to the doctor for it. They did some blood work to find out that his vitamin B12 level was low and was suppose to take vitamin B12 (along with a multi vitamin) to get his levels back up. If he did that he would feel so much better as his energy level would be back up. At that same time he ended up also going to a sleep doctor who put him on Ambien CR and between the two of them he was feeling better and also sleeping better.
Since he was feeling so good he quit taking his B12’s and after awhile his Ambien CR quit working like they used to. When he told his doctor about how he would eat a lot in the middle of the night and not remember, she immediately took him off of them and put him on a different kind of sleeping pill. Since then nothing seems to work and he is once again tired all the time and can’t ever get into a deep sleep at night.
I finally did get him to stop taking sleeping pills. If they don’t work for you.. why take them? All it’s doing is putting chemical’s into your body. I just wish though he would remember to take the B12’s. I keep wondering if his level is once again at the basement level (that’s what it was last time) and if he got those levels up he would feel better so he wouldn’t want to sleep all day.
I wish I knew more about vitamins. Is one brand better than another? If I bought some from www.bestmultivitamin.org are they any better or the same as if I bought some at Target? All I know is I need to find some that work great where he would start taking them and would be feeling better again.
Do you have a loved one who has issues sleeping? If so, have you ever done anything (bought a cd, or done the hypnosis) and had it work?
